D'Angelo Shines in the Bronze Section; Kalmar is Out

Ryan D'Angelo
Ryan D'Angelo

Ryan D'Angelo has cashed in 4 World Series of Poker (WSOP) events this year, but his greatest WSOP achievement to date remains his 3rd place finish in the $2,000 version of this event held in 2008. He took home $326,812 in that event after losing out to Marco Johnson and the eventual winner Alexandre Gomes. D'Angelo has just removed another man with a WSOP history. Jon Kalmar will be remembered as the British punk who finished 5th in the WSOP Main Event the year that Jerry Yang took down the title.

The table told us that there were a trio of limpers into the pot that included D'Angelo. Kalmar raised to 725, D'Angelo then raised to 1,850 to clear out the debris, Kalmar moved all-in and D'Angelo called.

Kalmar{Q-} {J-}
D'Angelo{K-} {K-}

The board produced no miracles for Kalmar and he was out. Meanwhile D'Amgelo moved up to 37,000.

A Chip and a Chair

A quick walk around the Pavilion room saw Dennis Phillips collecting chips putting him around 12,000, Tim West sitting with around 10,000, and Andre Akkari cashing in on a few pots.

The one person that stuck out the most was Jason Somerville who appeared to have no chips in front of him. Somerville seemed to be just sitting at his table watching the action, but he was dealt a hand and we saw him plop his last green chip on top of his cards. We don't know what happened, but Somerville was sitting with one chip worth 25.

Somerville then put his last chip in and another player raised it up to 400. The rest of the table folded and Somerville found himself at risk.

Somerville: {k-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

The board came {a-}{a-}{9-}{6-}{3-} and Somerville was awarded his double up, and was pushed his 125 chip pot.

A few hands later when we went back to check up with Somerville we saw he was sitting with 350. A player in middle position had raised to 400, the small blind had called and Somerville moved all in from the big blind.

The flop came {5-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and both of Somerville's opponents checked. We had a repeat of action on the {2-Hearts} turn, and again on the {4-Diamonds} river with both players checking.

Somerville announced he had a pair of fours and flipped over {10-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, the small blind then said "sorry man" and flipped over his {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} like he had the best hand. Nine high however was not going to win the hand. The middle position mucked and Somerville collected the pot.

A Bronze Section Brimming With Brilliance

Pius Heinz - the WSOP ME Champion is in the house
Pius Heinz - the WSOP ME Champion is in the house

The Bronze Section is brimming with quality including our reigning World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion Pius Heinz. Heinz has had a very quiet 2012 since winning his whopping $8,715,368 first prize with just one cash in January, but he is performing well thus far with 12,600 chips after raking in a decent sized pot against the Romanian Mihai Manole.

There are also some cracking tables such as Table #62 housing the likes of the young British hotshot, Mathew Frankland, former November Niner Joseph Cheong and one of the most famous faces in poker Liv Boeree. Of the three players it is Frankland who has started the better and he told us about a recent flush over flush hand versus Claudio Cecchi where he was hoping for a little bit more than the 2,950 that he actually got out of his three streets of value. The heart flush hit on the turn with Frankland holding {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} in position and Cecchi holding {9-Hearts} {4-Hearts} in the big blind.

One of our latest WSOP champions, Craig McCorkell, also has a tough table. He is accompanied by the German online and live star Michael Eiler, Aaron 'aejones' Jones and Chris McClung and how about Table #60, which contains the likes of Leo Margets, and WSOP bracelet holders Jason DeWitt and Scott Montgomery.

Last but not least we have a European rap star and a WSOP veteran in the house. Bruno 'Kool Shen' Lopes is seated at Table 49 with 11,700 chips and some recent form. Kool Shen has won nearly $500,000 in the year 2012. Then you have Tom 'The Shamrock Kid' McCormick who has over $500,000 in WSOP earnings and forty WSOP cashes. The Shamrock Kid currently leads the way with 22,000 chips.

Red Hot

Over in the red section things are moving along pretty normally. Gavin Smith, Eric Froehlich, Victoria Coren, and Isaac Haxton all have dipped a little below starting stack, but with the blinds still so low there is plenty of time to kick things in to high gear and start collecting chips.

Eric Baldwin is also mixing it up over in red, we recently caught up to him with a {k-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs} board exposed. Baldwin faced a bet from a player in middle position for 1,275. Baldwin in late position made the call and the dealer exposed the {a-Spades} for the river. Both players took their time letting seconds drip off the clock before each on knuckled the felt for a check.

Baldwin flipped over {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for top two pair and his opponent reacted by mucking his hole cards. Baldwin now sits around 9,000.

A couple of tables over we saw Nick Binger call a 250 raise from the button preflop. The flop came {Q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and Binger's opponent in the under the gun position bet out 275. Binger's response was to raise it to 725.

The {j-Spades} on the turn slowed the under the gun player down and saw a check. Binger bet out 1,025 and a call was made.

The {4-Diamonds} on the river brought with it an all in bet from Binger's opponent, a bet that would put the shorter stacked Binger all in. Binger was visible confused by the bet and took his time deciding his best option. In the end Binger made the call and was saddened to see his opponent flip over {4-Spades}{5-Spades}, a hand Binger couldn't beat. Binger mucked his cards, wished everyone good luck and made his exit.

Pavilion Players

Erika Moutinho
Erika Moutinho

With tables now filled almost all players are playing are nine-handed and the rattling of chips is the only noise that can be truly deciphered. Play for Event 46 has been extended to the Pavilion room and after a recent walk-through here is what we have noticed.

The Pavilion room consists of plenty of players, a few you might recognize are Chino Rheem, Humberto Brenes, Jeff Madsen, Brent Hanks, and Jason Lester.

Lester boasts over $2,253,059 in live casino winnings and just made his first 2012 World Series of Poker cash a few days ago in Event 38: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em. Unfortionately a 19th place finished prevented him from WSOP gold. A good run today though could put himself in position to make another deep run.

Another player in the field is Jennifer Tilly. The Academy Award nominee is currently sharing elbow space and a few laughs with Matt Stout. Jeff Madsen and Tim West both are at the same table, as are Andre Akkari and Erika Moutinho.

Moutinho managed to be getting involved in a growing pot as we walked by, and this is what we saw. The board read {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and a player in late position fired out 400 after a handful of players in front of him knuckled the felt. Moutinho in the cut-off made the call and the rest of the table folded.

The {9-Hearts} on the turn prompted a check from the late position player and a bet of 650 from Moutinho. A call was made and both players were witness to the {9-Diamonds} on the river. Another check from Moutinho's opponent allowed for a bet of 1,100 to be placed by Moutinho. The late position player min-raised and Moutinho completed the call.

Cards were tabled and the late position player flipped over {K-}{k-}, and Moutinho countered with {3-Hearts}{3-Spades} for a full house threes over nines. With that hand Moutinho surpasses the 10,000 mark and sits with around 11,000.

Internet Wizards Cast a Spell on the Silver Section

It seems as though the Internet whizz kids have all decided to ply their trade in the Silver Section of the Brasilia Room today. Michael 'muchenHB' Telker, Chris 'NigDawG' Brammer, Kyle 'First-Eagle' Weir and the highly thought out name of Jack 'jackellwood' Ellwood just a few of the names of youngsters who have bled the Internet banks dry.

So those are the wizards, but we also have a magician. Antonio Esfandiari has had a great World Series with 5 cashes which includes a 3rd place finish in Event #36: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout and he is doing some wheeler dealing on his phone in the Silver Section.

Here are two hands that we picked up during our little trip and they involve one of those Internet wizards Chris Brammer and Hirel 'Sunny' Patel.

There was an early position limper before Brammer raised to 225 in the cutoff. Seth Fischer called on the button and the original limper made it a threesome. The flop was {A-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} and it was left to Brammer to c-bet for 350 and only Fischer called. The turn {7-Hearts} was checked through before a 500 bet by Fischer picked up the pot on the {8-Clubs} turn.

Nicolas Yunis raised to 200 in early position, Ivan Mamuzic three-bet to 425 in mid-position, Hiren Patel four-bet to 750 from the hijack, Mamuzic five-bet to 1,825 and Patel folded.
