Rafferty Eliminated by Spano

Level 9 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Tom Rafferty (right)
Tom Rafferty (right)

Tom Rafferty committed the last of his chips in preflop and was called by Robert Spano.

Spano: {j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Rafferty: {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

The flop came {8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} extending Rafferty's lead to a pair.

The {10-Clubs} on the turn, however, improved Spano to an unbeatable straight.

The meaningless {q-Clubs} dropped on the river and Rafferty was eliminated.

Chip Counts

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Vincent Huang was down to his last 32,000 and got it all-in pre-flop from the blinds with {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs} against the {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} of Michael Kim, but could not improve on the {j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts} runout and departed just before the close of the level.

Shivan Abdine re-entered just before the blinds climbed.

Here's how the 23 remaining High Rollers are stacking up as level 8 draws to a close:

Double Knockout For Kempson; Abdine and Trevallion Fall

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Shivan Abdine
Shivan Abdine

Shivan Abdine moved all in from the cutoff. Corey Kempson then moved all in over the top from the button. Alexander Trevallion followed from the big blind and was covered by Kempson.

Kempson: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Trevallion: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Abdine: {a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, improving Kempson to a flush on the turn, resulting in both Abdine and Trevallion hitting the rail simultaneously.

Otto Doubles Mooney

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

A short-stacked Geoff Mooney got the last of his chips in pre-flop with {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} against the {a-Spades}{q-Spades} of Ryan Otto to claim a much-needed double when the board ran out {3-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} to climb to just under starting stack with 47,500. Otto still had piles after the hand, sitting on a stack of ~215,000.

Kempson Re-enters

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Corey Kempson is back for bullet number three, bringing the total number of entries up to 47, meaning just 6 more entries or re-entries are needed to make the AU$1m guarantee. Of these 47 entries, 27 remain in contention with the late registration period closing in 90-minutes after the 30-minute break that comes at the end of level 9.

Hassan Eliminated by Fu

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Huss Hassan
Huss Hassan

Qiang Fu raised from the cutoff before Huss Hassen re-raised to 12,000 from the button. The action folded back to Fu who three-bet to 38,500. Hassan wasted no time moving all in for around 100,000. Fu snap-called with more behind.

Fu: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Hassan: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Hassan was unable to improve against the over pair, after the board ran out {q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, resulting in his elimination from the event.

Karamalikis Chops vs. Fu, Hassan Bests Spano

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Over on the feature table, the action folded around to Jonathan Karamalikis on the button and he raised to 3,300 with Qiang Fu (big blind) the only caller.

The monochrome {8-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop saw no betting, and the {2-Clubs} turn and {k-Spades} river were checked through also, with Fu showing down {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} to chop the pot with Karamalikis' {6-Spades}{4-Spades}.

The next hand also saw and all-black flop of {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs} after Huss Hassan chose to defend his big blind from a Robert Spano under-the-gun open to 3,500.

Hassan check-called Spano's 5,700 continuation bet to bring the pair to the {k-Clubs} turn which brought checks from both players. The {4-Clubs} river also saw no betting. Spano turned over {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} but pitched his cards into the muck when Hassan showed down {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for top pair.

Kempson Eliminated by Pritchard

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Corey Kempson
Corey Kempson

The flop showed {7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and around 23,000 had already amassed in the pot.

Jason Pritchard bet 8,500 from the small blind. Corey Kempson called from the hijack.

Both players checked the {9-Clubs} on the turn before the {10-Clubs} completed the board.

Pritchard checked. Kempson then moved all in for 30,700. Pritchard asked for a count.

"Did you river me or not?" questioned Pritchard, before making the call.

"I guess you have me beat," replied Kempson, before tabling {a-Spades}{9-Spades} for two pair.

Pritchard tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for a better two pair and the winning hand.

Kempson made his way to the cashier to re-enter and give himself another chance in the tournament.
