The Recently Departed

Ivey Staying Involved and Winning More Pots

Action folded to Phil Ivey in the cutoff seat, and he raised to 700. Joao Martins made the call from the button, and everyone else folded. On the {Q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop, both players checked to see the {10-Diamonds} come out on fourth street. Ivey bet 1,100, and Martins folded.

On the next hand, Flavien Guenan opened to 725 from middle position. Ivey made the call in the hijack seat, and Elie Payan made the call from the small blind. The flop came down {9-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} before play checked to Ivey. He bet 1,500, and both of his opponents folded.

"Better to Be Lucky Than Good"

A short-stacked Alain Roy got his last 4,125 all in preflop and was racing again Luca Dal Cerro.

Showdown
Roy: {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Dal Cerro: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

It was a classic flip, but Roy needed to improve to stay alive. That's exactly what he did on the {2-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop, while the {6-Spades} turn and {J-Clubs} river locked up the double.

"Better to be lucky than good," Roy said after the hand.

Ivey Check-Raises

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

From under the gun, Joao Martins raised to 750. On the button, Flavien Guenan called, then Phil Ivey called from the big blind. From there, the dealer spread the {A-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop, and Ivey checked. Martins bet 1,600, which was called by Guenan. Ivey, though, wanted to play for a bit more and check-raised to 7,100. Martins folded, as did Guenan, and Ivey won the pot.

Defending Champ Looks Good Early

Last year, Elio Fox won the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event for €1.4 million. This year, he's off to a solid start in his title-defense run. He's already up to 65,000 and just busted Pascal Pere.

Some More Counts

Alioto vs. Watson

Four players created a pot of about 2,500 and took a flop of {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Spades}. After a check, Mike Watson put out a bet of 1,250 and Dario Alioto, who was seated to his direct left, was the only player to make the call.

The dealer proceeded to burn and turned the {2-Clubs}, Watson bet 3,000, Alioto called, and the {5-Clubs} peeled off on the river. Both players checked and Watson tabled {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}, which was good enough to win the pot as Alioto simply mucked.
