While PokerNews is here offering live updates from the Wynn Millions, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you about some of the side events that have taken place out over the past month at the Wynn Summer Classic.
In Event #2: $1,100 NLH, 1,720 runners created a $1,677,000 prize pool that was paid out to the top 189 players. Among those to cash but fall short of the final table were Eric Baldwin (64th - $5,211), Jared Jaffee (45th - $6,437), Mike Shin (30th - $8,162), Jerod Smith (22nd - $10,598), and John Paul Cao (10th - $21,538).
In the end, it was Texas native Jonathan Tamayo who collected every chip in play to capture the first-place $237,935 payday.

It's not everyday Poker Hall of Famer Johnny Chan is in tournament action, so when the 1987 and 1988 WSOP Main Event champ takes a seat, you pay attention. We decided to spend an entire orbit observing Chan, who nearly won three in a row before Phil Hellmuth made him settle for runner-up in 1989, and here is what we saw.
Hand #1 (lojack): It was eight-handed action and Chan began the orbit with 36,000. In the first hand, action folded to him and he followed suit.
Hand #2 (UTG+1): The UTG player folded and so did Chan.
Hand #3 (UTG): Chan folded.
Hand #4 (Big Blind): Frank Stepuchin raised to 700 under the gun and the player in the small blind called. Chan opted to put in the additional 400 and it was three-way action to a flop of 
. Everyone checked and then did the same on the 
turn, which brought about the 
on the river. The player in the small blind bet 2,300 and both Chan and Stepuchin folded.
Hand #5 (Small Blind): The UTG player raised to 600 and Chan folded when action reached him.
Hand #6 (Button): A player in middle position raised to 600 and Chan called from the button. Stepuchin came along from the small blind, the player in the big did the same, and it was four-way action to the 
flop.
Three checks put action on Chan and he bet 1,300. Stepuchin called, the other two players folded, and it was heads-up action headed to the turn, which came the 
.
Stepuchin checked and then wasted little time in folded when Chan bet 2,100.
Hand #7 (Cutoff): The UTG player raised and Chan folded.
Hand #8 (Hijack): Before the hand was dealt, Chan had walked away from the table for parts unknown. His hand was mucked and the orbit came to an end with Chan up a little from where he started.

Shaun Deeb opened for 800 under the gun and action quickly folded around to Daniel Strelitz who defended his big blind, bringing about the 
flop.
Strelitz check-called the 1,200 continuation bet from Deeb and the 
turn was checked by both players.
Once the 
completed the board on the river, Strelitz led out for 1,500 and was quickly called by Deeb.
Strelitz rolled over his hand then quickly mucked after Deeb tabled the winning hand

Aaron Massey raised to 700 from late position and was called by his opponent in the hijack.
Massey continued for 700 after the 
flop hit the felt and his opponent called bringing the 
turn. Both players checked and did the same after the 
completed the board on the river.
Massey tabled 
and it was good enough to scoop the pot.

With around 13,000 already in the pot and a flop of 
, WPT champ Frank Stepuchin bet 4,000 from the big blind and his opponent on the button called.
After the dealer burned and turned the , Stepuchin bet 12,600 and left himself 16,000 behind.
His opponent didn't waste much time in raising all in for 26,100 total and Stepuchin hit the tank.
As he's prone to do, Stepuchin struck up a conversation with his opponent, who indulged in some back-and-forth banter. Eventually, Stepuchin released his hand opting to preserve his remaining chips.

Daniel Mingus opened with a 900 raise from middle position and then called the 3,000 three-bet Abraham Jamil Obeid made from the hijack.
The flop saw Mingus check-call his 8,600 stack after Obeid jammed and the two players tabled their hands.

Action was checked to Pupillo who fired out a 4,200 bet and with thhree spades on the board, his opponent mucked their hand.
